Authorities in the United Kingdom have frozen 85 high-end properties in London linked to a wanted Chinese national identified as Su Jiangbo, popularly referred to as “Mr X.”
The asset freeze was announced by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) on March 24, following the issuance of Unexplained Wealth Orders (UWOs) and Interim Freezing Orders under the Proceeds of Crime Act.
Su Jiangbo, 40, is reportedly wanted in China for alleged involvement in illegal gambling operations. He appears on a fugitive list published by a court in Fujian province, which describes him as a criminal suspect linked to fraud, cybercrime, and gambling offences.
Investigations by global media organisations revealed that Su used a St. Kitts and Nevis “golden passport” to establish multiple companies in the UK, through which he acquired luxury real estate worth over $108 million.
Property records show that between September 2023 and June 2025, companies linked to him purchased at least 85 properties across central and south London, including a $13 million penthouse overlooking iconic landmarks such as St. Paul’s Cathedral and the River Thames.
The CPS stated that the properties are suspected to have been acquired using proceeds of unlawful activities and confirmed that a civil recovery investigation is currently underway.
Despite the development, Su Jiangbo has not been charged or convicted of any crime in the UK. Authorities say he has been given three months by the High Court to explain the source of the funds used for the purchases or risk having the assets permanently seized.
Further findings show that Su held multiple nationalities, including citizenship in Cambodia, and leveraged investment-based passport schemes to gain global mobility.
Anti-corruption experts have long warned that luxury real estate—especially new-build developments—can be vulnerable to money laundering, often involving bulk purchases through shell companies.
The case has once again raised concerns over loopholes in property transactions and the need for stricter enforcement of anti-money laundering regulations in the UK.
