Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have uncovered a major international drug trafficking operation, intercepting cocaine cleverly concealed inside dried fish heads, popularly known as “Okporoko,” in Lagos.
According to NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, the operation was carried out by the agency’s Murtala Muhammed International Airport Strategic Command following intelligence on cross-border criminal activities.
During the raid in the Ojo area on March 19, operatives arrested a suspected kingpin, Akputa Dickson Ejike, 36, with three jumbo bags containing 237 wraps of cocaine weighing 5.80 kilograms. The illicit consignment was reportedly destined for Delhi.
In a separate operation in Ekiti State, NDLEA officers arrested an 80-year-old suspect, Oke Samuel, during a raid in Efon-Alaaye. Recovered from him were 2.2 kilograms of skunk and a small quantity of methamphetamine.
Further crackdowns revealed multiple trafficking attempts:
- Shipments bound for the United Kingdom were intercepted, including 1.9kg of methamphetamine hidden in automobile filters and controlled drugs such as morphine and fentanyl
- A drug syndicate operating from Yaba, Lagos, led by Omolade Abigail Jolayemi, alias “Iya Ghana,” was dismantled, with 76.30kg of “Ghana Loud” cannabis seized
- Another suspect was arrested in Surulere with 41kg of the same substance
In Ondo State, operatives uncovered nearly 895kg of skunk in an uncompleted building, while additional seizures were recorded in Benue State and Edo State, including a warehouse bust in Ekpoma yielding over 576kg of illicit drugs and codeine syrup.
Meanwhile, in Taraba State, NDLEA officers intercepted a truck transporting 135kg of compressed cannabis concealed in animal feed, leading to the arrest of two suspects.
The series of operations highlights the agency’s intensified nationwide crackdown on drug trafficking networks and transnational criminal activities.
