The Nigeria Police Force in Edo State has begun an investigation into a viral video showing a disturbing bullying incident involving students of Igbinedion Secondary School in Benin City.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, the command confirmed that the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, has ordered a detailed investigation into the incident.
According to the statement, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area has been directed to visit the school and begin a comprehensive inquiry into the case. Authorities assured the public that the students involved would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law and with consideration for their ages.
Meanwhile, the management of Igbinedion Education Centre, which owns the school, confirmed that the students involved in the bullying and physical assault captured in the video have already been expelled.
In a statement signed by school officials including Acting Principal Ann Apeh, the management described the behaviour in the video as disturbing and contrary to the institution’s values.
“The school maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy toward bullying, cultism, intimidation, harassment, and any form of violence,” the statement said.
The school added that it is working with the families of those affected and cooperating fully with authorities as investigations continue.
Police have also urged members of the public to remain calm and provide any useful information that could assist with the ongoing investigation.
