The Enugu State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused police officers of harassing its members and seizing vital party registration materials during an internal meeting held in the state.
SUNTV Global Channel gathered that the incident reportedly occurred on March 5, 2026, during the inauguration of the ADC Membership Registration and Revalidation Committee in Enugu.
According to a petition signed by the state chairman, Stella Chukwuma, and the state secretary, Prince Izunna Anyanwu, the meeting was convened by the committee chairman, Barrister Sunday Okereke, at Hotel Admiral Resort in Independence Layout.
The gathering was intended to formally launch the party’s membership registration and revalidation exercise in the state, in line with directives from the party’s national leadership.
However, the process was abruptly disrupted after Okereke allegedly refused to release key registration materials needed for the exercise.
Party officials stated that the materials, which included membership cards and registration registers, had earlier been entrusted to Okereke for transportation to the state after they were collected from the office of the Deputy National Organising Secretary.
According to the petition, the materials had been in Enugu since February 26, 2026.
The party leadership alleged that during the flag-off event, Okereke unexpectedly walked out of the meeting and declined to hand over the materials to party leaders despite repeated requests.
When members insisted that the items be released in accordance with party procedures, Okereke allegedly contacted police officers.
Shortly afterwards, officers reportedly led by the Divisional Police Officer of the New Haven Division arrived at the venue.
ADC leaders claim the officers intimidated and harassed party members before leaving the venue with Okereke and the registration materials.
The party said the incident has thrown the state chapter into confusion, especially as it has only ten days to complete the membership registration and revalidation exercise mandated by the national leadership.
Following the incident, the Enugu ADC leadership submitted formal petitions to the state command of the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS), demanding an investigation into the actions of the officers involved.
The party also called for the immediate recovery and return of the seized materials and urged security agencies to question Okereke over what it described as the unlawful possession and removal of party property.
In addition, the state chapter expressed concerns that the materials might have been compromised due to the manner in which they were taken away.
As a result, the leadership asked the party’s national headquarters to invalidate the allegedly compromised materials and provide fresh membership cards and registers to enable the exercise to continue.
The petition further warned security agencies against interfering in the internal affairs of political parties and called for strict neutrality.
ADC leaders in Enugu also raised suspicions that external political forces might be attempting to disrupt the party’s activities during a crucial stage of its restructuring.
Some members alleged that individuals linked to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) could be behind attempts to destabilise the party, although no concrete evidence was provided to support the claim.
The state chapter has also written to key national leaders of the party, including the National Chairman, David Mark, the National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, and the National Organising Secretary, Barrister Chinedu Idigo, requesting urgent intervention.
Despite the crisis, the Enugu ADC leadership said it remains committed to strengthening the party and ensuring that its internal democratic processes continue without further disruption.
