The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has called on the Federal Government and state governments to urgently review workers’ salaries and allowances, warning that Nigeria’s rising cost of living is pushing workers to the brink.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Monday, TUC President Festus Osifo and General Secretary Nuhu Toro expressed deep concern over the economic hardship facing Nigerian workers as the country enters 2026 amid persistent inflation and ongoing economic reforms.
“As we step into 2026, Congress remains deeply concerned about the harsh economic realities confronting workers,” the labour centre stated.
According to the TUC, inflation and rising prices of basic goods and services have drastically reduced workers’ purchasing power, making existing salaries increasingly inadequate. The union stressed that urgent intervention is needed to prevent further deterioration in workers’ welfare.
The TUC called on governments at all levels to immediately enhance workers’ allowances as a temporary relief measure, pending the full implementation of a new National Minimum Wage expected in 2027, in line with Nigeria’s labour laws.
“In view of persistent inflation and rising living costs, the TUC calls on governments at all levels to urgently review and enhance workers’ allowances as a stop-gap measure while awaiting the implementation of a new National Minimum Wage in 2027,” the statement read.
The labour body also warned that Nigerian workers should not be forced to shoulder the burden of economic reforms without adequate protection.
“Nigerian workers must not be made to bear the brunt of economic reforms without proper safeguards and support mechanisms,” the TUC cautioned.
Despite the economic challenges, the congress urged workers to remain united, assuring them of its continued commitment to defending their rights and improving their welfare.
“Comrades, unity remains our greatest strength. As we move into 2026, let us do so with renewed resolve, strengthened solidarity, and unwavering commitment to the ideals that bind us together,” the statement concluded.
