ALGIERS, Algeria — At least 25 people have been killed and 44 others injured after a passenger bus veered off the road and plunged into a ravine in Boumerdes Province, northern Algeria.
The tragic accident occurred on Friday in the El Karma area, about 50 kilometres east of the capital, Algiers. Authorities said the bus was travelling from Sétif when the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to leave the highway and crash into a deep ravine.
Emergency responders launched a large-scale rescue operation, transporting the injured to nearby hospitals while recovery efforts continued at the scene.
Officials have confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the crash.
Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb visited the accident scene to assess the situation and meet with emergency personnel coordinating rescue efforts.
Following the tragedy, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune declared three days of national mourning in honour of the victims.
The latest disaster adds to a series of deadly road accidents in Algeria. Official figures indicate that 3,838 people lost their lives and more than 37,000 others were injured in road crashes across the country in 2025, underscoring ongoing concerns over road safety.
Authorities are expected to release further details as investigations continue.
