The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has launched a fresh attack on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, describing him as a “recurrent troublemaker” whose recent declaration of support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) has finally exposed his true political intentions ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Monday and signed by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the party said Wike’s open endorsement of a presumed APC presidential candidate while still parading himself as a PDP member amounted to blatant anti-party activity.
According to the PDP, Wike’s conduct over the years has been a major source of internal crises within the opposition party, particularly since his emergence as governor of Rivers State in 2015.
“Since he assumed office as Governor of Rivers State, Wike has been a recurrent troublemaker in the leadership of the PDP,” the party stated. “From the Ali Modu Sheriff era to the Uche Secondus leadership and later the Dr. Iyorchia Ayu chairmanship, Wike consistently played key roles in installing party leaders, only to later spearhead movements to remove the same individuals.”
The PDP recalled that Wike was instrumental in the emergence of Dr. Iyorchia Ayu as National Chairman against the advice of several party elders, only to later champion the “Ayu-must-go” campaign that deepened internal divisions.
The party also accused the former Rivers governor of undermining democratic principles at the state level, citing allegations of candidate imposition, exclusionary practices, and the controversial decision to prevent a duly nominated PDP presidential candidate from campaigning in Rivers State during the last election cycle.
“Wike’s politics thrives on perpetual conflict,” the statement said. “He feeds on attention and seeks relevance through calculated disruption, and when deprived of attention, he attempts to destroy everything around him.”
Reacting to Wike’s recent media interview, the PDP claimed the minister appeared increasingly desperate, alleging that he was fearful of losing political relevance, control over Rivers State, and the attention of the Presidency.
“All through the interview, Minister Wike showed clear signs of anxiety over his waning influence and frustration with the firm stance of the PDP’s national leadership,” the party added.
The PDP said Wike’s recent actions and public statements now leave no doubt that he and his political associates have chosen to work against the party’s collective interest in favour of the APC.
“Now that the mask of pretence is off and he has openly declared that he and his group will support the President and the APC in the 2027 presidential election, Nigerians can clearly see their determination to undermine the PDP as part of a selfish political bargain,” the statement read.
The party further warned that any secret political agreement aimed at weakening the PDP was not only unethical but legally unenforceable.
Reaffirming its commitment to Nigerians, the PDP said it remains focused on rebuilding and preparing for victory in 2027.
“We assure Nigerians that the PDP will present a credible presidential candidate who will enjoy massive public support and emerge victorious in 2027. The PDP belongs to the people, and no individual can personalise or hijack the party,” it stated.
The statement concluded by noting that the Kabiru Turaki-led National Working Committee is intensifying efforts to resolve internal disputes, address pending court cases, and reposition the party for electoral success ahead of the next general election.
