ABUJA, Nigeria — The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has alleged the existence of a coordinated plot against its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu, following comments made during a television programme that called on the Federal Government to execute him.
In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group condemned the remarks, describing them as dangerous and alleging they formed part of a broader campaign targeting Kanu and the Biafra agitation.
The controversy followed comments made by entrepreneur Chigozie Nnabugwu during an appearance on News Central Television’s Breakfast Xtra programme, where he argued that executing Kanu would help restore peace and normalcy in Nigeria’s South-East region.
Reacting to the broadcast, IPOB rejected the comments, insisting that they amounted to incitement and posed a threat to Kanu’s safety. The group also alleged that efforts have previously been made to silence its leader because of his continued advocacy for the Biafra cause.
IPOB further claimed that insecurity in the South-East escalated only after Kanu’s arrest and extradition to Nigeria in 2021, maintaining that the group should not be held responsible for the violence in the region. Nigerian authorities have consistently denied the allegation and have repeatedly linked many violent incidents in the South-East to criminal elements and members of IPOB and its armed wing, claims the organisation continues to reject.
The group announced its intention to institute legal proceedings against News Central Television, Chigozie Nnabugwu, Reno Omokri, Bashir Ahmad, Lolo Nneka Chimezie, and others over what it described as defamatory statements concerning its leader.
IPOB also urged its supporters to remain peaceful and committed to its objectives while pursuing legal avenues over the matter.
As of the time of filing this report, News Central Television, Reno Omokri, Bashir Ahmad, Lolo Nneka Chimezie, and the Federal Government had not publicly responded to IPOB’s allegations or the threat of legal action.
