Many commuters are feared dead following a suspected bomb explosion along the Yar’Tasha–Dansadau highway in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State, triggering panic and renewed concerns over security on major roads in the North-West.
The explosion, which occurred on Saturday, reportedly caught several travelers in its path. Although the exact number of casualties remains unclear, eyewitness accounts and viral social media videos suggest significant loss of life and property, with terrified commuters seen fleeing the scene moments after the blast.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Zamfara State Command, SP Yazid Abubakar, told Daily Post via telephone that a blast had indeed occurred but said full details were still being awaited.
“I can confirm that there was a blast in that area, but the incident just happened. I can’t give details yet. We will update the public later,” he said.
Social media users quickly reacted to the tragic development, describing it as another deadly attack on innocent Nigerians.
An X user, Nuhu Sada (@NuhuSada0), wrote:
“Another tragic attack on innocent travelers in Zamfara. Families are grieving, lives are lost, and property destroyed. Security agencies must act swiftly to stop further attacks and bring the perpetrators to justice.”
Another user, @DanKatsina50, described the blast as a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) allegedly planted by bandits, questioning the level of security on the busy route and calling for urgent investigation.
Meanwhile, in a related development, residents of Offa town in Kwara State were thrown into panic late Thursday night after loud explosions rocked parts of the area, destroying some residential buildings.
The Offa incident came shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump announced American airstrikes targeting ISIS-linked positions in parts of Nigeria, raising speculation over whether the explosions were linked to foreign military action or purely a Nigerian military operation. Authorities are yet to clarify the source of the blasts.
