In a major political shake-up, six members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), significantly altering the balance of power within the state legislature.
The lawmakers, all elected on the PDP platform, formally announced their defection, citing shifting political dynamics and aligning themselves with the APC as the party continues to strengthen its grip on legislative structures across the country.
Those who crossed over include Hon. Muktar Nasir Kaura (Kaura North), Hon. Nasiru Abdullahi Maru (Maru North), and Hon. Amiru Ahmad Keta (Tsafe West). Others are Hon. Bashar Aliyu Gummi (Gummi I), Barrister Bashir Abubakar Masama (Bukkuyum North), and Hon. Bashir Bello (Bungudu West).
The development represents a significant setback for the PDP in Zamfara State, while further consolidating the APC’s influence in the House of Assembly.
The Zamfara defections come amid a broader wave of political realignments affecting the opposition PDP at the national level. Earlier this week, SaharaReporters reported that the PDP’s representation in the Rivers State caucus of the House of Representatives had been reduced to just two members following the defection of six lawmakers to the APC.
The lawmakers — Robinson Dekor, Solomon Bob, Cyril Hart, Victor Obuzor, Blessing Amadi and Felix Nwaeke — formally announced their exit from the PDP on the floor of the House. Their defection left only the House Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, and Kelechi Nwogu as the PDP’s remaining representatives from Rivers State.
While reading their letters, Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, said the lawmakers attributed their decision to persistent divisions and unresolved internal crises within the PDP. The defectors also stated that the party’s instability had hindered their ability to pursue their political goals, prompting them to embrace President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” under the APC.
The PDP’s situation in Rivers State has continued to worsen in recent weeks. Just last week, three other lawmakers — Boniface Emerengwa, Awaji-Inombek Abiante and Boma Goodhead — also defected to the APC, further shrinking the party’s presence in the state.
With the latest exits, the PDP, which once held 12 seats in the Rivers State caucus of the House of Representatives, is now left with only two, highlighting the deepening internal crisis confronting Nigeria’s main opposition party.
