ANAMBRA, NIGERIA — The Anambra State Government has arrested a 47-year-old woman, Mrs. Onyinyechi Esther Charles, over allegations of operating an illegal maternity home and carrying out surgical procedures without the required medical qualifications.
According to state health authorities, the suspect, an indigene of Abia State who is married to a native of Nteje in Oyi Local Government Area, allegedly operated a traditional birth attendant (TBA) facility in Umueri, Anambra East Local Government Area.
Authorities allege that Mrs. Charles performed caesarean sections (CS), handled normal vaginal deliveries and carried out other surgical procedures despite not being a licensed medical practitioner or surgeon.
During interrogation, the suspect reportedly admitted to conducting the procedures without the necessary qualifications or legal authorisation. She also allegedly disclosed that she was formerly known as Eze Nwanyi before becoming a church minister and later presenting herself as a surgeon.
Confirming the arrest, the Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, said officials recovered surgical instruments and other medical equipment believed to have been used for the unauthorised operations during a raid on the facility.
The commissioner added that hospital beds used to admit and treat patients were found on the premises. Health officials also reportedly discovered what appeared to be a shrine and an altar within the facility.
The premises have since been sealed and confiscated by the state government pending the conclusion of legal proceedings. The suspect is expected to be arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction.
The Anambra State Government reiterated its commitment to protecting residents from unqualified medical practitioners and urged members of the public to seek healthcare services only from licensed hospitals and certified medical professionals.
