The World Health Organisation (WHO) has raised urgent concerns over escalating violence against health workers in southern Lebanon, following the killing of nine paramedics in multiple attacks earlier this month.
WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, described the incidents as part of a disturbing pattern targeting medical personnel and facilities. He revealed that March has become the second deadliest month for health workers in Lebanon since monitoring began in October 2023, with over 120 medics wounded since the escalation started on March 2.
In recent attacks, five health workers were killed and two injured in Zoutar al-Sharqiya, two more were killed and three wounded in Kfar Tibnit, while one paramedic died in Ghandouriyeh and another in Jezzine. Additional injuries were reported in Kfar Dajjal.
Ghebreyesus warned that repeated assaults are severely disrupting healthcare delivery. “Four hospitals and 51 primary health care centres are now closed, significantly limiting access to essential care at a time when it is most needed,” he stated.
The WHO boss emphasized that health workers are protected under international humanitarian law and should never be targeted. He urged an immediate end to attacks, stating: “The only way to end these tragedies is to end attacks on health care, NOW!”
The killings add to an already deepening humanitarian crisis in southern Lebanon, where ongoing hostilities continue to threaten civilians and critical infrastructure, leaving medical personnel exposed to life-threatening conditions while providing emergency services.
