At least three persons have reportedly been shot dead by Nigerian Army personnel deployed to provide security for Sterling Petrochemical and Fertilizer Company in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, sparking outrage among residents.
Eyewitnesses told SUNTV Global Channel that one victim was a native of Nnung Udoh community in Ibesikpo, while another was a passenger traveling by taxi from Port Harcourt to Uyo when he was intercepted and killed by the soldiers. Disturbing video footage from the scene showed corpses lying beside caskets, with heavily armed soldiers stationed along the road, intensifying fear in the community.
Residents accused the soldiers of repeated harassment, intimidation, and violence, claiming such incidents are not isolated. “Our so-called Army men often invade people’s homes and seize their belongings with impunity,” one resident said.
Efforts to obtain official statements from the Nigerian Army or Akwa Ibom State Police Command were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
The incident has reignited concerns over military brutality and the use of armed forces to protect private commercial interests at the expense of civilian safety.
