A Nigerian soldier stationed in Maiduguri, Borno State, has made an emotional appeal to Nigerians for prayers after claiming that troops are facing relentless attacks from terrorists operating in the region.
In a viral video circulating online, the soldier—who did not disclose his identity—said military personnel at a base in Maiduguri have been repeatedly attacked by armed insurgents, resulting in the loss of soldiers and the destruction of military equipment.
Speaking in Hausa in the widely shared clip, the soldier said the situation has become overwhelming for troops stationed in the area.
“Nigerians, both Muslims and Christians, please help us with prayers. We the Nigerian Army in Maiduguri, Borno State, are in serious trouble. Every day, bandits attack our base, kill our troops and burn our vehicles,” he said.
The soldier explained that many of the troops have been forced to take shelter in the bush while trying to defend the country from insurgent attacks.
“We left our families, our loved ones and our parents to defend Nigeria and Nigerians. We are staying in the bush, not because we don’t care about our people, but because we are trying to protect the country,” he added.
He further lamented that the continuous attacks have left many soldiers uncertain about how to handle the situation.
“This is now beyond our power. We have lost focus on what to do. Please Nigerians, remember us in your prayers,” he said.
The emotional message ended with a prayer asking God to protect soldiers from the insurgents.
“God, please protect and save us from these evil people,” he said.
The video surfaced amid growing security concerns in Borno State, where insurgent groups including Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have intensified attacks on military formations.
Security sources recently confirmed that the Nigerian military lost three senior commanding officers within one week following separate insurgent attacks on military bases across the state.
The officers reportedly killed include Major U.I. Mairiga, commander of the Mayenti base in Bama Local Government Area; Lieutenant Colonel Umar Faruq, commander of the Kukawa base and the 101 Brigade; and Lieutenant Colonel S.I. Iliyasu, Commanding Officer of the 222 Battalion in Konduga.
The latest attack occurred on March 9, when insurgents reportedly stormed a military camp in Kukawa Local Government Area around midnight, killing Lt-Col Umar Faruq and several soldiers during the assault.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of troops operating on the frontlines of Nigeria’s long-running fight against insurgency in the North-East.
