A new report by the United States Congress has sparked fresh international debate after describing Nigeria as the deadliest country in the world for Christians, citing decades of killings, persecution, and widespread destruction of communities.
The explosive document, backed by key U.S. legislative committees, calls for sweeping sanctions, intensified diplomatic pressure, and major security restructuring in Nigeria. It also commended former U.S. President Donald Trump for redesignating Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) over religious freedom violations.
According to the findings, armed Fulani militia groups and terrorist organizations have allegedly carried out sustained attacks over many years, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths, including pastors and priests.
The report also claims:
- Thousands of churches and schools have been destroyed
- Kidnappings remain widespread
- Blasphemy laws in northern states are allegedly used to silence minorities
- Many convictions reportedly occur without due process
Lawmakers stated that after decades of violence, the crisis now represents a critical humanitarian and global security concern.
The investigation involved senior American lawmakers and committees, including the House Foreign Affairs Committee, which led hearings and gathered testimonies from officials and civil society groups.
The report proposes:
- A U.S.–Nigeria security agreement to protect vulnerable Christian communities
- Deployment of stronger Nigerian security forces in high-risk regions
- Removal of armed groups from seized farmlands
- Safe return and resettlement of displaced persons
It also calls for publicly naming perpetrators, imposing visa bans, and sanctioning individuals or groups linked to attacks.
Among its most controversial recommendations, the document urges Nigeria to:
- Repeal Sharia criminal codes and anti-blasphemy laws
- Increase accountability for sectarian violence
- Strengthen counter-terror financing measures
The report further suggests reviewing international trade routes tied to cattle exports to pressure armed groups.
U.S. lawmakers warned that continued sectarian violence in Nigeria could destabilize West Africa and threaten broader international security interests.
The document also raised alarms about alleged illegal mining operations and foreign influence fueling insecurity in some regions.
It concluded with a call for a renewed strategic partnership between both nations to combat terrorism and restore stability.
