Washington Supports Chad’s Withdrawal From International Criminal Court, Renews Criticism of Tribunal
The United States government has welcomed Chad’s decision to begin the process of withdrawing from the International Criminal Court (ICC), urging other member countries to consider leaving the Rome Statute, the treaty that established the court.
In a statement released by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of African Affairs, Washington described Chad’s move as a step toward protecting national sovereignty and accused the ICC of exceeding its authority.
“The United States welcomes Chad’s decision to withdraw from the ICC and join the growing number of nations reclaiming their sovereignty from this flawed institution,” the statement said.
The U.S. government further stated that it would not surrender its sovereignty to what it described as an unaccountable international tribunal, calling on other ICC member states to withdraw from the Rome Statute.
The development follows Chad’s announcement that it had started the process of leaving the Hague-based court, which was established to prosecute individuals accused of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes.
The latest position reflects the continued opposition of the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump toward the ICC. Washington has previously maintained that the court does not have jurisdiction over American citizens and has rejected cooperation with some of its investigations.
The ICC, founded in 2002, has jurisdiction over crimes committed in member states or cases referred by the United Nations Security Council. However, the United States has never been a party to the Rome Statute and has repeatedly challenged the court’s authority over its citizens.
The U.S. government’s renewed criticism of the ICC comes amid ongoing legal disputes involving sanctions imposed on some ICC judges following court actions involving alleged war crimes investigations.
