Fresh tensions appear to be emerging within the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of a planned campaign event in Kano, as a group representing internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Borno State has called on the party to reconsider the participation of former Borno State Governor, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff.
The Borno IDPs Welfare Association, comprising displaced persons from Borno State currently residing in Kano, made its concerns known in a letter dated September 4, 2026, addressed to the Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, Senator Abdulazeez Yari.
The association said it remains committed to the APC and President Bola Tinubu’s re-election ambition but expressed concern that Sheriff’s appearance at the campaign event could reopen painful memories among members of the displaced community.
According to the group, many of its members were directly affected by years of insurgency in Borno State and continue to carry emotional scars from the period.
In a letter signed by its chairman, Ambassador Muhammad Gana Bukar, the association appealed to the APC campaign leadership to consider the sensitivities surrounding Sheriff’s proposed participation in the Kano event.
The group stressed that its position should not be interpreted as opposition to the APC or President Tinubu’s political ambition.
Rather, it said the appeal was intended to ensure that the planned campaign rally remains peaceful, united and focused on the party’s message and vision.
The association warned that Sheriff’s presence could potentially polarise the atmosphere and distract attention from the objectives of the campaign gathering.
It also expressed concern that some displaced persons from Borno State who support the APC could feel alienated by his participation.
The group therefore appealed to Senator Yari to intervene and ensure that the event remains inclusive and focused on promoting unity among party members and supporters.
The letter was reportedly copied to the Kano State leadership of the APC and submitted through the party’s state secretariat.
Ali Modu Sheriff served as Governor of Borno State from 2003 to 2011 and later became National Chairman of the APC. His political career has remained closely associated with Nigeria’s North-East, a region that has suffered years of devastating attacks by Boko Haram and other armed groups.
Sheriff has consistently denied allegations linking him to Boko Haram, describing such claims as unfounded.
The latest development highlights possible internal challenges within the ruling party as it continues preparations for major political activities and seeks to maintain unity across its various support groups.
While the Borno IDPs Welfare Association maintains its support for President Tinubu and the APC, the disagreement underscores growing concerns about the choice of political figures appearing at campaign events and the potential implications for party unity.
