British health authorities are preparing emergency containment measures following a deadly hantavirus outbreak aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius, an incident that has already claimed three lives and sparked international health concerns.
Officials confirmed that passengers and crew members returning to the United Kingdom from the Dutch-operated expedition vessel will undergo medical assessment, testing, and temporary isolation as part of efforts to prevent any possible spread of the virus.
The remaining 22 British nationals aboard the ship are expected to arrive in the UK on a chartered flight after the vessel docks in the Canary Islands this weekend.
Authorities have designated — a facility previously used during the COVID-19 pandemic — as the main isolation centre for the returning passengers.
According to reports, at least five confirmed hantavirus cases have already been linked to the outbreak, including one of the three passengers who died during the voyage.
Two infected British nationals are currently receiving treatment in hospitals located in the Netherlands and South Africa, while another suspected case is reportedly being monitored on Tristan da Cunha, a remote island in the South Atlantic where the ship had previously docked.
In a joint statement, health and emergency agencies including NHS England North West, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), Merseyside Police, and local authorities said extensive safety arrangements had been put in place ahead of the passengers’ arrival.
Officials stated that the isolation period could initially last up to 72 hours, after which public health experts would determine whether individuals could continue isolation at home or require extended monitoring at approved facilities.
Despite growing public concern, British authorities insisted that the risk to the wider population remains low, stressing that all necessary precautions are being implemented.
The outbreak has attracted international attention after additional suspected cases linked to the cruise ship reportedly surfaced in Spain and other locations connected to passengers who had travelled from the vessel.
