Former Kano State Governor and ex-presidential candidate, , has raised fresh concerns over Nigeria’s worsening security and economic situation, warning that insecurity across the country is leaving millions of families devastated.
Kwankwaso made the remarks on Saturday while speaking at the national convention of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Abuja, where he accused successive leaders of failing to properly prepare the country for global economic and political changes.
Addressing party members and supporters, the former governor said Nigeria was currently facing one of the most difficult periods in its modern history, marked by widespread hardship, displacement, and declining public confidence in governance.
“We are witnessing a sharp decline in the quality of life. Insecurity has created widows and orphans across the land. Millions have been displaced from their homes,” Kwankwaso declared during his speech.
He further lamented the impact of insecurity on investment, infrastructure, education, and social stability, arguing that poor governance had worsened the suffering of ordinary Nigerians.
According to him, Nigeria has failed to take advantage of changing global realities due to weak leadership and lack of strategic planning.
Kwankwaso also criticised what he described as harsh economic policies implemented without adequate protection for vulnerable citizens, saying many Nigerians are now struggling with worsening living conditions.
The former senator used the occasion to promote the growing profile of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, describing the party as an emerging platform for “national renewal” capable of attracting support from across the country.
In a major political declaration, Kwankwaso backed the decision to zone the NDC presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections, saying the move was necessary to promote fairness, unity, and national balance.
“It allows the region to complete its turn in producing national leadership,” he stated, adding that the party must remain committed to equity, federal character, and inclusive governance.
Kwankwaso also called for leadership free from ethnic and religious bias, insisting that rebuilding Nigeria would require trust, competence, and national unity rather than divisive politics.
He concluded by urging Nigerians to actively participate in the democratic process by registering with the and engaging in efforts aimed at political change and institutional reform.
The speech comes amid increasing political realignments and growing debate over the direction of opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
