The Uburu Traditional Rulers Council has cancelled the planned conferment of chieftaincy titles earlier scheduled to take place on August 30, 2026, as part of the Iri Ji Ndị Uburu Festival.
The decision was contained in an important public announcement issued by Chief Nicholas Odi, FCIHRM, Chief Media of the Uburu Traditional Rulers Council and President General of Eweze Uburu Autonomous Community.
According to the statement, the Council arrived at the decision after carefully reviewing recent events, reactions and submissions concerning the planned conferment.
The Council said the cancellation was made in the overriding interest of peace, unity and the integrity of the Uburu Ancient Kingdom.
It also expressed regret over any inconvenience the decision may cause nominees, their supporters and the people of Uburu, while appealing for understanding from all concerned.
Refund for Nominees
The Council announced that money contributed by the nominees in support of the Iri Ji Ndị Uburu Festival would be refunded.
All nominees have therefore been directed to submit their account details to the Chief Media on or before 6:00 p.m. on August 30, 2026, to facilitate the refund.
Alternatively, nominees may opt to receive a physical cash refund of the amount they contributed.
Iri Ji Ndị Uburu Festival to Hold
Despite the cancellation of the chieftaincy title conferment, the Council clarified that the Iri Ji Ndị Uburu Festival will proceed as scheduled on August 30, 2026.
The Council urged the people of Uburu to remain calm, united and committed to the peace, unity and development of the ancient kingdom.
