A 23-year-old man, identified as Akuade Samuel, has been arraigned before a Magistrate’s Court in Ondo State over the alleged killing of his mother, Akuade Olufunke, with a cutlass.
Samuel was arraigned before Magistrate Olateju Odenusi-Fadeyi on a murder charge following the alleged incident at the Power Line area of Ore, Ondo State.
According to the prosecution, led by Taiwo Oniyeye, the incident occurred around noon on August 6, 2026.
The prosecution alleged that Samuel attacked his mother with a cutlass and cut her neck, resulting in her death.
The charge stated that the defendant “unlawfully used a cutlass to cut the neck” of his mother, causing her death.
The prosecution said the alleged offence contravenes Section 319 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Volume 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.
During the proceedings, the prosecutor urged the court to remand Samuel while the case file is forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.
However, the defendant’s counsel, A.D. Obademi, asked the court for a short adjournment to enable him to file an affidavit opposing the prosecution’s application for remand.
The court subsequently adjourned the case until August 31, 2026, for hearing of the application for remand.
Samuel remains presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
