Police in Kebbi State successfully repelled an attack by suspected Lakurawa militants along a border road late Friday night, authorities have confirmed.
The incident occurred around 9:45 pm when a group of armed men, reportedly linked to the Lakurawa criminal network, advanced toward police positions under the cover of darkness. Eyewitnesses say the assailants attempted to disguise their movement by driving cattle ahead of them.
Operatives of the Police Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU), who were on high alert in the area, engaged the attackers in a fierce gunfight. Thanks to superior firepower and tactical coordination, the police forced the militants to retreat into the surrounding bush. Remarkably, no lives were lost, and no injuries were reported, although some temporary security structures sustained minor damage.
Kebbi State Police Commissioner, Umar Mohammed Hadeija, commended the officers for their professionalism, stating:
“Our operatives were vigilant and professionally responded to the attack. The bandits were repelled and forced to flee. Although some temporary security structures were damaged, no lives were lost and no injuries were recorded.”
In response to the attack, additional security personnel have been deployed to reinforce the border corridor and prevent further incursions. The police also issued a stern warning to local herders and livestock owners against night-time grazing and suspicious cattle movements, emphasizing that unlawful activities would be met with firm action.
The police command assured residents that the situation remains calm and under control, urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest security formation.
