Three people, including a 17-year-old girl, have been confirmed dead after a vehicle in the convoy of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reportedly lost control and crashed into structures in Bayelsa State during a presidential working visit.
The incident occurred on Friday at Obogoro, along the approach to the Dr. Goodluck Jonathan Bridge, as the President was in the state to commission several projects executed by Governor Douye Diri.
Eyewitnesses said the vehicle, said to be the last in the presidential convoy, suddenly veered off the road and slammed into a mechanic workshop and nearby structures before being stopped by concrete barriers left in the area.
The impact reportedly killed three persons on the spot, while causing panic and tension among residents who rushed to the scene.
Security operatives quickly cordoned off the area and whisked the driver of the vehicle away. Attempts by some residents to approach the scene were dispersed with tear gas fired by police officers.
As of press time, there has been no official statement from the Nigeria Police Force or Bayelsa State authorities confirming the incident or providing further details.
The tragic development has added to growing tension in the state during the presidential visit, which also saw reports of a separate altercation involving military personnel in another part of Bayelsa.
Authorities are expected to launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
