ADC Accuses Tinubu Administration of Weakening Democratic Institutions and Checks on Power
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of repeatedly crossing democratic boundaries, alleging that the government has weakened key institutions responsible for maintaining checks and balances.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, made the claims while reacting to questions about whether the current administration had taken actions that should raise concerns about Nigeria’s democracy.
According to Abdullahi, the constitutional roles of the executive, legislature, and judiciary have been undermined, leaving democratic institutions weakened.
He said the purpose of separating powers among the three arms of government is to prevent the concentration of authority and protect citizens’ rights.
“The principle of checks and balances is intended to create positive tension between the executive, judiciary, and legislature in order to prevent dictatorship,” Abdullahi said.
The ADC spokesperson also accused the government of failing to fully implement approved budgets, describing the budget process as a legal obligation after presidential assent.
He alleged that the administration had carried out spending outside approved budgetary provisions, claiming that such actions raised questions about accountability and adherence to the law.
Abdullahi further accused the government of disregarding court decisions and receiving support from the National Assembly, particularly under the leadership of Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
He argued that democracy cannot function effectively without strong opposition parties, independent institutions, and the ability of citizens to freely choose their leaders.
The ADC spokesman also alleged that actions taken against opposition parties and ongoing legal battles were part of efforts to weaken democratic competition.
“Democracy without checks and balances is meaningless,” Abdullahi said, insisting that the government’s actions had created uncertainty over the limits of democratic governance.
The allegations have added to ongoing political debates about governance, accountability, and the state of democratic institutions in Nigeria.
