The Igbo Community Association in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has called on President Bola Tinubu and the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate Senator Shehu Buba over allegations linking him to individuals accused of terrorism and related activities.
The group questioned why the Bauchi South lawmaker remains free despite the allegations, drawing a comparison with the case of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, who is currently serving a life sentence following his conviction on terrorism-related charges.
In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by its President-General, Nze Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe, and Secretary-General, Mazi Chinwoke Emmanuel Onah, the association accused the Nigerian government of applying what it described as a double standard in the administration of justice.
The group, which says it represents millions of Igbo residents in Abuja, alleged that security alerts and intelligence reports had raised concerns over Senator Buba’s alleged contacts with individuals described as wanted terrorist suspects.
According to the association, the reports allegedly contained claims that some suspects had access to the senator’s residence and received financial support from him.
However, the allegations against Senator Buba have not been established by a court of law.
The group called on relevant security agencies to urgently investigate the claims and make their findings known to Nigerians.
“This silence is no longer explainable by oversight. It is beginning to look like protection, and Nigerians deserve to know why,” the association said.
The Igbo group particularly questioned what it described as the difference in the handling of the allegations against the senator compared with the prosecution of Nnamdi Kanu.
It argued that the Nigerian justice system must apply the same standards to all citizens, regardless of political office, ethnicity or social status.
According to the association, Nigeria’s fight against terrorism would lose public confidence if allegations involving politically influential individuals were not subjected to the same level of scrutiny applied to other suspects.
The group therefore made three major demands to the Federal Government.
First, it called for the immediate investigation of Senator Shehu Buba by the DSS and other relevant security agencies.
Second, it demanded that the Tinubu administration publicly disclose any actions taken in response to alleged security reports concerning the lawmaker.
Third, the association said the senator should face prosecution if a thorough investigation establishes sufficient evidence to support any allegations of terrorism financing or related offences.
The group insisted that Nigeria’s fight against terrorism must not be influenced by political power or social status.
It maintained that all allegations involving national security must be independently investigated and resolved through due process.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no publicly available indication of a criminal conviction against Senator Shehu Buba in relation to the allegations referenced by the association.
The controversy comes amid increasing calls from different groups for Nigerian security agencies to clarify the circumstances surrounding allegations involving the Bauchi South senator.
