A classroom building at Odokerere High School, Ikorodu, Lagos State, collapsed on Thursday while pupils were receiving lessons, raising fresh concerns over the safety of public school infrastructure in the state.
The affected school, owned by the Lagos State Government, reportedly caved in during class hours. Fortunately, no casualties were recorded, as pupils managed to escape before sustaining serious injuries.
A video of the incident, which has since gone viral on social media platform X, was shared by user @omoelerinjare. In the footage, a narrator described the chaotic scene and expressed relief that the pupils acted swiftly to save themselves.
“This Odokerere High School at Ikorodu collapsed while students were receiving lectures, but we thank God nothing happened,” the narrator said. “A lot of things could have happened to those children if they were not smart enough to quickly escape.”
The narrator also alleged that school authorities attempted to discourage people from recording the incident, a claim that has further fueled public outrage.
“The funniest part is that the school authorities were shouting that people should not video the unfortunate incident,” the voice added, questioning why such a dangerous situation should be concealed.
The collapse has triggered widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians calling on the Lagos State Government to urgently inspect public school buildings and address the state of decaying infrastructure to prevent future tragedies.
As of the time of filing this report, officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Education and relevant emergency agencies had not issued an official statement on the cause of the collapse or whether the affected classrooms would be shut pending investigation.
