Tension has escalated in Idofin Odo Ashe community in Oke-Ero Local Government Area of after suspected bandits carried out a fresh attack on Thursday evening, leaving residents in fear and forcing many to flee their homes.
According to eyewitnesses, the attackers invaded the community in large numbers and immediately began firing gunshots indiscriminately. The sudden attack threw the entire area into chaos as men, women, and children ran in different directions seeking safety.
A local source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the situation quickly spiraled out of control. “The attackers have taken over the community. They are shooting on sight, and people are running up and down for safety,” the source said.
Residents described the incident as another disturbing episode in a series of repeated attacks that have plagued the community for months. Many families have already abandoned their homes, while others are making arrangements to leave amid fears of kidnapping and possible loss of lives.
The continued insecurity has severely affected daily life in the area, especially education. Government Secondary School Idofin, along with three primary schools, has remained shut for over five months due to ongoing threats. Parents say children have been forced to stay at home, raising concerns about their academic future.
Community members also recalled a recent protest where residents, including elderly women and youths, took to the streets to demand urgent intervention from authorities. They carried placards with messages calling for an end to insecurity and urging the government not to abandon rural communities.
During the protest, one elderly woman emotionally appealed for help, stating that the community was gradually becoming deserted as people continued to flee due to killings and kidnappings. She warned that if urgent action is not taken, more residents would be forced to leave.
Residents are now calling on the Kwara State Government and relevant security agencies to act swiftly to restore peace and security in Idofin Odo Ashe. They fear that without immediate intervention, the community could soon be completely deserted as insecurity continues to worsen.
