A Federal High Court sitting in Kano has struck out a suit filed by former Deputy Governor of , , after he withdrew his legal challenge against ongoing impeachment proceedings initiated by the Kano State House of Assembly.
The case was dismissed by on Thursday following a formal application by Gwarzo’s counsel, Umar Danbaito, who informed the court of his client’s decision to discontinue the suit.
Gwarzo had initially approached the court on March 25, seeking an order to stop the Assembly from continuing the impeachment process which began on March 5. However, the court had earlier declined to grant an interim injunction, instead directing that the lawmakers be put on notice to justify why such relief should be granted.
With the withdrawal of the suit, the legal effort to halt the impeachment process has now come to an end, clearing the way for the Kano State House of Assembly to proceed with its actions.
The impeachment move is believed to be connected to ongoing political developments in the state, particularly Gwarzo’s alleged refusal to defect from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) alongside Governor .
Lawmakers had earlier disclosed that the impeachment notice, endorsed by 38 members of the Assembly, was carried out in line with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
Gwarzo is also facing serious allegations, including claims that he received kickbacks from the 44 local government councils in the state between June 2023 and January 2024.
The development marks a significant turn in the political situation in Kano State, as attention now shifts to the next steps to be taken by the state legislature regarding the impeachment process.
