Panic and destruction have swept through parts of Adamawa State after suspected Boko Haram fighters launched a coordinated assault on Sheweri and Kirchinga communities in Madagali Local Government Area.
According to local sources, the attackers stormed Sheweri in the early hours, setting homes and structures ablaze while terrified residents fled into nearby bushes to escape the gunfire. Witnesses say large sections of the town are still burning, with casualties feared as the situation remains unclear.
The insurgents reportedly advanced swiftly to Kirchinga, where they attacked the local market area. Nigerian troops stationed there attempted to resist but were forced to retreat after intense clashes with the heavily armed fighters.
Eyewitness accounts described scenes of chaos, thick smoke, and sustained gunfire as the attackers tightened control over both communities, leaving residents displaced and vulnerable.
Kirchinga holds symbolic importance as the hometown of Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri.
Security analysts say the latest violence signals a troubling escalation in insurgent activity across Adamawa State, raising concerns about the growing challenges facing military operations in the region.
The attack follows a recent raid reportedly carried out by ISWAP fighters on a military camp in Garahamojili, where soldiers were killed and equipment destroyed.
As of the time of this report, military authorities have yet to issue an official statement, while thousands of residents remain displaced amid fears of further attacks.
