The teacher accused of assaulting a 12-year-old pupil who later died in Adazi-Ani, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, has surrendered to the police.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed on Saturday that the suspect, identified as Mrs. Dim Ebere, 47, voluntarily reported to the Neni Divisional Police Headquarters after days of intensive search operations by the Command’s Safe School Protection Squad.
Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the suspect is currently in police custody and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka, where investigations into the case will be concluded.
According to the police, the suspect’s decision to surrender followed sustained manhunt operations and continued engagement with community leaders and stakeholders in Adazi-Ani.
The Command commended members of the community, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders for their cooperation, assuring the family of the deceased and the public that justice would be pursued in accordance with the law.
Police also urged residents to remain calm, avoid taking the law into their own hands, and continue providing useful information to assist ongoing investigations.
The development comes a day after the Anambra State Police Command declared the teacher wanted over the death of the pupil.
According to police, officers attached to the Neni Divisional Headquarters responded to the incident on July 16 and rushed the child to a hospital, where doctors confirmed the pupil dead while receiving treatment.
The victim’s body has been deposited in a morgue for autopsy, while preliminary police findings reportedly revealed visible marks of injuries on different parts of the child’s body.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage across Anambra State, with renewed calls for justice and stricter measures against excessive corporal punishment in schools.
Police say investigations are ongoing, and the outcome will determine the next legal steps in the case.
