Super Falcons forward Esther Okoronkwo has reportedly been subjected to racist abuse on social media after alleging that cash was stolen from players’ wallets while Nigeria’s women’s national team was staying at a hotel in Casablanca, Morocco.
The online backlash followed claims by several Super Falcons players that money went missing from their hotel rooms while they were away preparing for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final.
According to the allegations, Okoronkwo lost $700, while team captain Rasheedat Ajibade reportedly lost $200. Veteran defender Osinachi Ohale and midfielder Halimatu Ayinde allegedly lost $100 each, while Joy Omewa was said to have lost $120.
Following the allegations, numerous social media users flooded Okoronkwo’s Instagram page with abusive messages, including racist slurs and derogatory comments targeting her race and appearance. Some users also posted images of primates, a racist trope widely condemned for dehumanising Black people.
The alleged online attacks have sparked widespread outrage, with many football fans and social media users calling for stronger action against racism and hate speech on digital platforms.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) nor the management of the Marriott Hotel in Casablanca had issued an official statement regarding the alleged theft or announced the outcome of any investigation.
Similarly, Moroccan authorities and Meta, the parent company of Instagram, had not publicly commented on the reported wave of racist abuse directed at the Nigerian international.
The Super Falcons remain focused on their campaign at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations as they continue their quest to extend Nigeria’s record as Africa’s most successful women’s football team.
