The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the deadline for political parties to submit the names and personal particulars of their candidates for the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections.

The electoral commission announced on Sunday that the submission deadline, which was initially scheduled to expire on Saturday, July 11, 2026, has been extended to midnight on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.

The decision was contained in a statement issued by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna.

According to INEC, the extension followed appeals from the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), which requested additional time on behalf of political parties that encountered difficulties uploading the names and personal details of their candidates within the stipulated period.

“The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has approved the extension of the deadline for the submission of lists of candidates for the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections by political parties,” the commission stated.

INEC explained that several political parties were unable to complete the online submission process before the original deadline, necessitating the extension.

“The decision to extend was based on appeals by the Inter-Party Advisory Council on behalf of political parties that were unable to upload the names and personal particulars of their candidates within the scheduled timeline,” the statement added.

The commission emphasized that the extension demonstrates its commitment to ensuring an inclusive electoral process while operating within the provisions of the law.

“The extension underscores the Commission’s commitment to ensuring inclusivity in its practices, while acting within the ambit of the law,” INEC said.

The electoral body further urged all political parties to make effective use of the additional time to complete the submission of all required documents before the new deadline expires.

Political parties are expected to finalize and upload all candidate information before midnight on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, in line with the revised timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections.

The extension comes as preparations continue nationwide ahead of the 2027 elections, with political parties intensifying efforts to conclude their nomination processes.
