Explosions have been reported in Tehran after Israel confirmed it carried out what it described as a “preventative” missile strike on Iran, marking one of the most serious escalations between the long-time rivals in recent years.
SUNTV Global gathered that Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, announced the operation early Saturday, stating the strikes were launched to neutralise what authorities described as imminent threats to Israel’s national security.
According to Israeli officials, the military action targeted locations inside Iranian territory in a pre-emptive effort to prevent a possible missile or drone attack. Following the operation, Israel declared a nationwide state of emergency, urging residents to remain close to shelters and strictly obey civil defence instructions.
The Israel Defense Forces also placed the country on “essential activity” status, suspending schools, public gatherings, and non-critical services amid fears of retaliatory attacks. Emergency sirens sounded across Israeli cities, while warning alerts were sent directly to mobile phones nationwide.
Meanwhile, Iranian state and local media reported multiple explosions in Tehran, including in central districts. Eyewitness accounts described thick smoke rising over parts of the capital, although officials have not yet confirmed specific targets or casualty figures.
There are also unverified reports suggesting possible logistical or intelligence support from the United States, though no full official confirmation has been issued by Washington.
The strike comes at a particularly sensitive time, as recent diplomatic talks between the U.S. and Iran had aimed to address Tehran’s nuclear programme and reduce tensions. Israel has consistently maintained that any agreement must include strict limits on Iran’s missile capabilities.
Security analysts warn that the latest military action could significantly undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts and heighten fears of a broader regional conflict across the Middle East.
