Nigeria’s Attorney-General of the Federation, , has initiated steps to review the detention of whistleblower and activist Chidiebere Justice Mark, popularly known as “Justice Crack,” with strong indications that he may soon be released and all charges against him dropped.
This development was disclosed by human rights lawyer after a high-level meeting with the justice minister on Wednesday.
According to Abubakar, the meeting was “productive” and focused on upholding the rule of law and protecting citizens who expose corruption and wrongdoing in government.
He revealed that both parties reached a consensus that no Nigerian should be punished for acts of patriotism, especially whistleblowing.
“There was a common ground that no Nigerian citizen who has helped in exposing corruption should be penalised,” Abubakar stated.
He added that the Attorney-General acknowledged that any individual detained or mistreated for exposing corruption deserves justice, and has now committed to facilitating the activist’s swift release.
Abubakar further disclosed that Fagbemi has shown readiness to discontinue all legal charges against Justice Crack, with a response expected within days.
The lawyer also raised concerns over growing public outrage, warning that Nigerians are increasingly resisting what he described as abuse of power and suppression of dissent.
He maintained that the whistleblower committed no offence and described the circumstances surrounding his arrest as unlawful, calling for not only his release but also compensation.
The case has drawn wider attention to alleged harassment of activists and whistleblowers, with Abubakar condemning what he termed a pattern of intimidation by state actors.
He also revealed that activist had advised the Attorney-General to ensure his office is not used to silence citizens.
Beyond this case, the meeting reportedly addressed other detention-related issues, including that of a Delta-based activist, as part of broader efforts to resolve politically sensitive matters.
With the Attorney-General now stepping in, expectations are high that the case will be resolved swiftly, as calls grow louder for justice, accountability, and protection of civil liberties in Nigeria.
