The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu for attending the Argungu Fishing Festival in Kebbi State, even as terror attacks continue to ravage parts of the country, reportedly claiming over 1,300 lives in just 41 days and leaving hundreds, including nursing mothers and children, in captivity.
In a statement released by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party condemned what it described as the President’s “misplaced priorities,” warning that celebrating a festival while funeral processions stretch across the nation shows a dangerous disconnect from the realities of Nigerians’ daily suffering.
“We are particularly alarmed that at a time of rising insecurity, the President and Commander-in-Chief was in Argungu enjoying a fishing festival, even as credible reports indicate that nearly 1,300 Nigerians have been killed in the last 41 days,” the ADC said.
The party also drew attention to a disturbing video linked to the Kaiama abductions in Kwara State, in which insurgents appeared to publicly dispute official casualty figures. The ADC described this as a “brazen attempt by terrorists to control the narrative on insecurity.”
“Fresh reports indicate renewed terrorist activity in Patigi Local Government Area as recently as last night,” the statement added. “The southern part of Kwara State has been under sustained terror pressure since last year. Now, attacks are spreading northward at scale, suggesting that terrorists may be consolidating a stronghold that could serve as a launchpad for operations across other states.”
Highlighting the strategic importance of Kwara State, the ADC said the Kaiama axis provides a direct corridor into Oyo State. “Sustained insurgent activity here could create vulnerabilities across North Central and South West regions. This is not an isolated incident but a warning sign of potential territorial expansion by terror groups,” the party said.
The ADC concluded with a stark warning: “When non-state actors feel emboldened to publicly contradict official figures, it signals a worrying erosion of deterrence. This also implies that kidnapping has become a commercial enterprise for terrorists, and they are determined not to be short-changed in ransom negotiations.”
As terror continues to escalate, the ADC’s condemnation raises urgent questions about government priorities and the management of national security.
