SABON BIRNI, SOKOTO STATE — At least 18 residents of Tsamaye community in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State are feared dead after overloaded boats capsized while they were fleeing a deadly bandit attack that also reportedly left dozens of people kidnapped and thousands displaced.
According to local residents, heavily armed bandits invaded the community on Monday night, forcing families to flee in panic as the attackers advanced. During the chaotic escape, several overloaded boats carrying villagers across a nearby river capsized.
Residents said about 25 people, mostly women and children, were thrown into the river when the boats overturned. While seven victims were rescued alive, at least 18 others remain missing and are feared to have drowned as search and rescue efforts continue.
The attack also reportedly resulted in the abduction of 37 residents, with witnesses alleging that many of those taken away were women and children.
Some residents accused security agencies of failing to respond despite receiving distress calls before the attackers overran the community. A local vigilante member also reportedly called for improved security equipment, including Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs), to strengthen operations against armed groups in the area.
In addition to the reported kidnappings, the attackers allegedly set houses ablaze, rustled livestock, and forced thousands of residents to flee Tsamaye and neighbouring communities in search of safety.
The Sokoto State Police Command has confirmed the attack and said additional security personnel have been deployed to the affected area to restore normalcy and support ongoing operations.
The latest incident comes just days after another deadly attack on the same Tsamaye community, highlighting growing security concerns in parts of Sokoto State.
