OSOGBO, OSUN STATE — The Imole Campaign Council, the campaign organisation for Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, has alleged a wave of political violence ahead of the August 15 governorship election, claiming that seven members of the Accord political movement have been killed, more than 20 others injured by gunfire, and over 60 supporters are currently in detention.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the campaign council said Governor Adeleke’s recent remarks directed at President Bola Tinubu were not an attack on the President but an appeal for his intervention to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful governorship election in Osun State.
According to the council, the governor urged the President to address what it described as growing political tension, intimidation, and violence in parts of the state to prevent a repeat of previous election-related unrest.
The campaign organisation further alleged that seven members of the Accord political movement had been killed within the last three months, while more than 20 others sustained gunshot injuries. It also claimed that over 60 supporters remain in police detention.
The council additionally alleged that 45 supporters of Governor Adeleke lost their lives during the 2022 governorship election violence, calling for greater protection of lives and property ahead of this month’s poll.
It also raised concerns over the ongoing dispute surrounding local government administration in the state, alleging irregularities in the management of council affairs and urging the Federal Government to intervene.
Earlier, Governor Adeleke appealed to President Tinubu to ensure credible elections in Osun State, alleging that some of his supporters had been attacked and unlawfully detained ahead of the governorship election. He also called for urgent measures to prevent violence and safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has previously rejected allegations linking the party to political violence in the state.
With the August 15 governorship election fast approaching, political activities have intensified across Osun State amid growing calls from stakeholders for peaceful campaigns, credible elections, and strict adherence to the rule of law.
