HELSINKI, FINLAND — The legal team representing detained pro-Biafra agitator Simon Ekpa says it is fully prepared for his upcoming criminal trial in Finland, with public court proceedings scheduled to begin on August 10, 2026.
The update was provided by Dr. David Nyekorach-Matsanga, who identified himself as a supporting technical international law expert working with the defence. In a statement released on Friday, he disclosed that he held a 15-minute meeting with Ekpa’s lead legal team on July 31, during which they reviewed preparations and confirmed their readiness for the trial.
According to the statement, the court process will commence on August 5 with a preparatory session involving the prosecution, defence counsel and the court to establish the timetable and procedural arrangements for the proceedings.
Nyekorach-Matsanga said the three days following the preparatory hearing are expected to be conducted behind closed doors, during which the court will examine evidence and intelligence to be presented by the prosecution. He noted that the defence intends to carefully scrutinise the reliability, source and admissibility of all evidence introduced during the trial.
He further stated that, based on information from Ekpa’s lead lawyer, Tommi, the proceedings will be opened to the public on August 10, 2026.
The defence also alleged that some of the intelligence expected to be presented may have been politically motivated and pledged to challenge any evidence it considers unreliable. Nyekorach-Matsanga maintained that the case should be decided strictly on credible and independently verifiable evidence in line with the principles of due process and the rule of law.
He also revealed that his legal team previously worked to oppose what it described as any unlawful attempt to remove Ekpa from Finland outside established legal procedures.
Nyekorach-Matsanga stressed that his involvement is limited to legal matters and not the political disputes surrounding the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) or other groups. He said the defence remains focused on ensuring a fair trial and upholding the rule of law.
Simon Ekpa, a Nigerian-Finnish politician and self-acclaimed Biafra agitator, is facing criminal proceedings in Finland over allegations linked to his activities. Finnish authorities have not publicly disclosed the full details of the evidence expected to be presented during the trial.
