Residents of Ilesha-Baruba in Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State have been thrown into mourning following the tragic killing of a prominent Islamic cleric, Alfa Iliasu, during a violent attack by suspected assailants.
According to sources in the community, the attackers stormed the cleric’s residence in the early hours of Saturday and allegedly struck him on the head with a cutlass, leaving him critically injured.
Witnesses said Alfa Iliasu was rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment, but sadly died before receiving medical attention due to the severity of his injuries.
The shocking incident sparked widespread outrage across Ilesha-Baruba, with hundreds of residents taking to the streets to mourn the respected religious leader and demand justice for his death.
Community sources revealed that three suspects were allegedly involved in the attack. One suspect was reportedly apprehended and lynched by an angry mob, while another was arrested and taken into police custody. A third suspect is said to have escaped and remains at large.
Videos circulating online showed emotional scenes as residents gathered in large numbers to grieve the slain cleric. The footage also captured heightened tensions around the local police station following the incident.
Alfa Iliasu was widely known throughout Baruten and neighboring communities for his religious teachings and influence within the Muslim community. His death has left many residents devastated, with several describing him as a respected spiritual leader and community figure.
Family members, friends, and community leaders have since paid tribute to the late cleric as he was laid to rest at the Ilesha-Baruba Muslim Cemetery in accordance with Islamic rites.
