South African police have arrested a 39-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman in connection with the alleged rape of a seven-year-old girl who was battling a life-threatening medical condition.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the child was admitted to a pediatric oncology ward in Gqeberha on January 14, 2026, for treatment of a severe illness. During her medical care, doctors reportedly made the shocking discovery that the young girl had also been sexually abused.
Authorities revealed that after months of treatment and recovery, the child was able to provide crucial information that helped investigators identify the alleged perpetrators, who are said to be people close to the victim.
Following an intensive investigation by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit in Humansdorp, both suspects were arrested and charged with rape.
The accused are expected to appear before the Humansdorp Magistrates’ Court on Monday, June 1, 2026.
Reacting to the incident, Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata described the case as heartbreaking, noting that the child was betrayed by those who should have protected her.
He praised the efforts of medical personnel and investigators, assuring the public that law enforcement agencies remain committed to ensuring justice for victims of crimes against women and children.
Police have also appealed to members of the public to provide any information that could assist ongoing investigations or help uncover other cases of child abuse.
