In a series of intelligence-led operations across Osun State, the Nigerian Police have arrested several suspects for unlawful possession of firearms and human remains, in a crackdown aimed at ensuring a safe Christmas and New Year celebration.
The arrests were confirmed on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, who stated that the operations were conducted under the directive of the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan.
On December 16, operatives apprehended Alarape Wasiu, a resident of Olorunsogo community in the Panada area of Ikire, after he was found in possession of an unlicensed single-barrel gun and three live cartridges. Investigators later recovered an additional firearm from his village at Baralola, Ikire. The police noted that the weapons were reportedly being used to terrorize the local community.
In a separate operation on December 3 at Ile-Ogbo in Iwo Local Government Area, three men — Taiwo Ogunbode (47), Thomas Ogo (52), and Lateef Afeez (30) — were arrested following credible intelligence linking them to the possession of human body parts. Items recovered included human skin, dried bones, teeth, hair, a white burial gown, ritual horns wrapped in red cloth, a small knife, Indian hemp, and ₦127,000 in cash.
Investigations revealed that the suspects had exhumed corpses from a Muslim cemetery at Gaa-Fulani, Ile-Ogbo, with the intent of using the human parts for money-making rituals. Authorities also uncovered a broader syndicate specialized in exhuming corpses for criminal purposes.
“All suspects have confessed to the crimes and will be charged to court upon completion of investigations,” Ojelabi said.
The Osun State Police Command has reiterated its commitment to eliminating criminal hideouts and black spots across the state, sending a strong warning to anyone involved in ritual activities or illegal firearms possession.
