Operatives of the (NDLEA) have arrested two elderly men, including an 83-year-old grandfather, as part of ongoing nationwide operations targeting illicit drug networks.
The octogenarian, identified as Pa John Ofiel, was apprehended in Samek area of , , during a raid on April 28, 2026. NDLEA officials disclosed that about 700 grams of skunk, a potent strain of cannabis, packaged in retail sachets, were recovered from him.
According to the agency, the suspect reportedly confessed to previously working as a shoemaker before venturing into the illegal drug trade.
In a related operation in , NDLEA operatives arrested a 78-year-old man, Ogunjobi Samuel, at his residence in Ilupeju-Ekiti. Authorities said approximately 350 grams of cannabis were recovered during the raid.
The arrests form part of a broader nationwide clampdown that has also led to multiple seizures and arrests across several states.
In , a 65-year-old driver, Oladayo Awoyemi, was intercepted at Ile-Ife toll gate while transporting a consignment containing 7 kilograms of skunk and 15 grams of methamphetamine. A follow-up operation led to the arrest of the alleged owner of the drugs, Ifedayo Babalola.
Similarly, in , two women—Rebecca King, 24, and Olaniyan Opeyemi, 31—were arrested in connection with the seizure of 1.925 kilograms of Colorado, a synthetic strain of cannabis. One of the suspects was intercepted along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, while the other was apprehended while attempting to receive the consignment in Ibadan.
Reacting to the operations, NDLEA Chairman, , commended officers for their vigilance and urged them to sustain the momentum in combating drug trafficking across the country.
The agency reiterated its commitment to intensifying efforts to curb the spread of illicit substances, warning that no individual—regardless of age or status—will be spared in the ongoing crackdown.
