A retired Nigerian Army officer was killed, and several residents were abducted in a violent attack on Kubuku, a small community in Kwaya Kusar Local Government Area of Borno State, local sources reported. The incident occurred on Friday, just minutes from Peze, underscoring the escalating insecurity in the region.
Residents said the attackers struck swiftly, leaving the community in shock. The identities of the kidnapped individuals, as well as the exact number of people taken, remain unknown, and the perpetrators have not yet been identified. Kubuku is a rural settlement located southwest of Biu, near Zalfu and Hyama villages, within Nigeria’s North East geopolitical zone.
This attack comes amid increasing concerns over banditry and insurgent activities targeting rural communities in northeastern Nigeria.
Meanwhile, the remains of Nigerian Army personnel killed in recent operations against terrorists in Borno were laid to rest on Friday at the Maimalari Military Cantonment Cemetery in Maiduguri. The burial ceremony was confirmed by Lt. Col. Sanni Uba, Media Information Officer for the Joint Task Force North-East, Operation Hadin Kai.
Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, described the event as a “painful reminder” of the sacrifices made by the armed forces. He praised the fallen soldiers for their courage, loyalty, and dedication to duty.
“In the profession of arms, there are moments of victory that fill us with pride,” Abubakar said. “Yet there are also solemn moments that weigh heavily on our hearts and remind us of the true cost of service. These brave patriots gave their lives for a cause greater than themselves—the nation and its people.”
The Theatre Commander assured that all benefits and entitlements due to the fallen soldiers would be processed to support their families. He also conveyed condolences on behalf of the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Army Staff, and the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, represented at the ceremony by the Executive Secretary of the Borno State Security Trust Fund, Mustapha Ali Yabe, commiserated with the military and families of the deceased. Zulum described the deaths as a painful loss to the nation and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting both the military and families of fallen soldiers.
