Tension erupted in on Monday as protesters stormed the , demanding the immediate release of detained blogger, Justice Mark Chidiebere, popularly known as “Justice Crack.”
The demonstration followed a court order by of the Federal High Court, who directed that the activist be remanded in the custody of the (DSS) after he was arraigned on charges of incitement.
Among those leading the protest was human rights activist , alongside members of the Take It Back Movement and other civil society groups. The protesters occupied the ministry’s premises, calling on the Attorney General of the Federation, , to immediately discontinue the case and secure the blogger’s release.
Chanting solidarity songs, demonstrators described Chidiebere’s detention as unjust and politically motivated. “Release Justice Crack! He is innocent!” they echoed.
Earlier in the day, the DSS arraigned the blogger under heavy security, reportedly barring journalists from covering the proceedings.
The case has drawn widespread attention following allegations that Chidiebere was subjected to inhumane treatment while in military custody before being handed over to the DSS. Reports claim he was chained to a tree under the sun for over 72 hours—a claim that has sparked outrage nationwide.
Family members say his ordeal began after he criticised the military over alleged extrajudicial actions and poor welfare conditions of soldiers.
In response, the defended its actions, accusing the blogger of attempting to incite discontent within its ranks. According to a statement by its spokesperson, the discussions involving Chidiebere had “serious implications for discipline and national security.”
Despite this, activists insist the prosecution is an attempt to legitimise unlawful detention and suppress dissent.
Monday’s protest marks a growing wave of resistance, with calls for accountability, respect for human rights, and the immediate release of the detained blogger gaining momentum across the country.
