Pope Leo XIV has appealed for calm, dialogue, and restraint following escalating tensions in the Middle East after the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Hosseini Khamenei.

In a statement released Sunday via his official X account, the pontiff expressed deep concern about the rapidly deteriorating situation, warning that continued violence could plunge the region into a devastating crisis.

“I am following with deep concern what is happening in the Middle East and in Iran during this tumultuous time,” the Pope said.

He stressed that stability and peace cannot be achieved through threats or military force, noting that weapons only lead to destruction, suffering, and loss of life.

The Catholic leader urged all parties involved to embrace what he described as “reasonable, sincere, and responsible dialogue” to prevent the crisis from spiraling beyond control.

“Faced with the possibility of a tragedy of immense proportions, I make a heartfelt appeal to all parties to assume the moral responsibility of halting the spiral of violence before it becomes an unbridgeable chasm,” he added.

The Pope also emphasized the need to restore diplomacy as the primary path to resolving conflicts and called on the faithful worldwide to continue praying for peace in the region.

Earlier on Sunday, Iranian state television confirmed that Khamenei died following coordinated strikes reportedly carried out by the United States and Israel.

Authorities said the 86-year-old leader was killed at his office during the early hours of Saturday when the attacks began.

The Iranian government has since declared a 40-day national mourning period in honour of the longtime leader, who had ruled the Islamic Republic since 1989.

The confirmation came after hours of conflicting reports, with some Iranian media outlets initially denying claims of his death before state television formally acknowledged it.

U.S. President Donald Trump earlier announced the development on his Truth Social platform, stating that advanced intelligence coordination between the U.S. and Israel ensured the success of the operation.

He described the killing as a significant turning point, suggesting it could reshape Iran’s political future.

The Pope’s appeal comes as international concern grows that the crisis could escalate into a broader regional conflict, with world leaders calling for restraint and renewed diplomatic engagement.
