Residents of Iffe Ijumu are demanding an urgent investigation after Iyabo Iwamofe suffered severe facial injuries when a tear gas canister allegedly fired by police officers struck her.
The incident reportedly occurred on March 8, 2026, in Ijumu Local Government Area, where witnesses said the victim was sitting in front of her shop before police officers arrived and began firing.
According to Iwamofe, she suddenly noticed a police vehicle near her shop before officers started shooting tear gas.
“I sat in front of my shop when I suddenly saw a police van close to my shop. The next I saw was that they started firing and I fell,” she recounted from her hospital bed.
Eyewitness Sade Obangbemi said residents initially believed the victim had died after she collapsed.
“We even thought she was dead, but we rushed her to the General Hospital. She was admitted around 8:30 p.m.,” Obangbemi said.
Community leaders later clarified that the injury was caused by a tear gas canister fired by officers from the Nigeria Police Force.
The Chairman of the Iffe Development Union, Bayo Joshua, described the incident as a serious violation of citizens’ rights, stating that the canister was allegedly fired directly into the woman’s shop without provocation.
According to Joshua, the injury has caused permanent facial damage and emotional trauma for the victim.
The community has now called on the Kogi State Police Command to immediately investigate the incident, ensure accountability, and provide compensation for the victim.
Residents also warned that failure to properly address the issue could lead to legal action against the police.
The incident comes amid rising tensions in the area, with residents also recalling the recent detention of Ayomide Felix Abiodun over a controversial Facebook post allegedly linked to criticism of the Ijumu Local Government Council leadership.
Community members insist Iffe Ijumu is a peaceful community and have urged authorities to ensure justice is served.
