Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has expressed confidence that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will survive its current political crisis despite being reduced to just two governors nationwide.
Makinde made the statement on Tuesday while speaking at an expanded meeting of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) in Abuja, shortly after Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Lawal’s defection leaves Makinde and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed as the only governors still serving under the PDP banner.
Addressing party leaders and members at the meeting, Makinde acknowledged that the party is going through one of the most difficult periods in its history. However, he insisted that the situation does not worry him and expressed optimism that the party would overcome the challenge.
According to him, Nigeria is currently witnessing an unusual political climate that even experienced political actors in the country have never seen before.
Makinde revealed that he had consulted several individuals who have long been involved in Nigeria’s political evolution, and many of them admitted that the current political landscape is unprecedented.
Despite the setbacks, the governor maintained that the remaining members of the party remain committed to standing with the Nigerian people.
He encouraged party stakeholders not to lose hope, stressing that political challenges are temporary and that the current phase would eventually pass.
Makinde also urged PDP leaders to remain conscious of their actions during this period, noting that history would judge the roles individuals and the party collectively play during the ongoing political developments.
Meanwhile, former Senate President and Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, Adolphus Wabara, also addressed the gathering, calling on party members to focus on rebuilding and repositioning the party.
Wabara said the recent judgment from the Appeal Court has opened an opportunity for the party to reorganise and start afresh.
He emphasised the importance of respecting the party’s constitution and adhering strictly to the rule of law in order to restore stability within the PDP.
According to him, the meeting was convened mainly to deliberate on the party’s internal challenges and chart a way forward rather than engage in lengthy speeches.
Wabara also suggested that recent political developments may be part of efforts aimed at weakening the party, but expressed confidence that the PDP can recover if members approach the situation with open minds and unity.
He urged party leaders to remain focused as the Board of Trustees prepares to take critical decisions that could determine the future direction of the party.
