Officials of Nigeria’s anti-corruption agency have interrogated the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, for several hours following the discovery of a large amount of foreign currency allegedly found in the possession of his wife.
Sources within the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) revealed that the judge was questioned on Tuesday regarding $160,000 reportedly intercepted by operatives during a trip his wife was making to Benue State.
According to insiders familiar with the investigation, EFCC officials stopped the woman during the journey and subsequently escorted her back to Abuja after discovering the cash in her possession.
An EFCC source disclosed that the interrogation of the Chief Judge focused on the origin of the funds and the circumstances surrounding the attempted trip.
The development comes amid increasing scrutiny of Justice Tsoho over a separate matter relating to asset declaration.
The Chief Judge is expected to appear before the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) on March 16, 2026, over allegations that he failed to fully disclose some of his financial assets as required by law.
A petition submitted to the bureau reportedly claims that Justice Tsoho did not declare several bank accounts during his asset declaration process. The accounts allegedly include three with United Bank for Africa (UBA) and another with Access Bank.
Under Nigerian law, all public officers are required to declare their assets, liabilities, and bank accounts, including domiciliary accounts. Failure to do so could constitute a violation of the Code of Conduct regulations.
If the bureau establishes a prima facie case, the matter could be referred to the Code of Conduct Tribunal for prosecution. Conviction may attract penalties including removal from office, forfeiture of undeclared assets, a possible prison term of up to 10 years, and disqualification from holding public office for the same period.
Meanwhile, the Federal High Court has issued a statement confirming that Justice Tsoho remains committed to cooperating fully with the investigation.
According to Catherine Christopher, Director of Information for the Federal High Court, the Chief Judge has indicated his willingness to honour the invitation of the Code of Conduct Bureau.
The court also noted that Justice Tsoho will appear before the bureau alongside his legal counsel, Senior Advocate of Nigeria Kanu Agabi, who is currently outside the country for medical reasons but has expressed readiness to participate in the proceedings upon his return.
Justice Tsoho has denied any wrongdoing and maintains that he has complied with all legal requirements regarding the declaration of his assets.
The outcome of both the EFCC probe and the Code of Conduct Bureau investigation is expected to determine the next steps in what is quickly becoming one of the most closely watched judicial controversies in the country.
