Residents of several communities in Katsina State have reportedly fled their homes in fear after bandits issued a chilling demand for hundreds of livestock in exchange for safety.
The affected areas, including Sukuntuni in Kankiya Local Government Area, have witnessed a mass exodus following threats allegedly delivered through a letter demanding 700 cows and 1,000 sheep to prevent an હુમ.
The alarm was raised by the Muslim Rights Concern in a statement released on Thursday, where the group described the situation as dire and heartbreaking.
According to the group’s Executive Director, Ishaq Akintola, residents began fleeing after receiving the ultimatum, which reportedly gave them until Friday, April 10, 2026, to comply.
Communities affected by the development are said to stretch across Kankiya, Musawa, Chuga, and Matazu, with hundreds of villagers seen trekking in search of safety.
“Panic-stricken residents fled in large numbers, leaving behind their homes and livelihoods,” the statement noted, describing scenes of distress among families, including women and children.
MURIC called on the Federal Government, led by Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to urgently intervene and address the worsening insecurity in the region.
The group warned that failure to act swiftly could lead to further humanitarian crises, noting that many communities across northern Nigeria continue to suffer from banditry and violent attacks.
Akintola also urged security agencies to take immediate steps to protect the affected communities and restore confidence among residents.
The development adds to growing concerns over insecurity in parts of northern Nigeria, where bandits have increasingly targeted rural communities with threats, kidnappings, and extortion demands.
