The outgoing Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, says he will return to academia and devote more time to religious activities after completing his 10-year tenure, describing public service as both professionally and spiritually demanding.
Speaking during the official handover ceremony to the new JAMB Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, Oloyede reflected on his years in office, saying government service often required difficult decisions that called for personal and spiritual reflection.
“You cannot serve in government for this long without, in one way or another, compromising on certain personal principles. I need some time to go back and seek God’s forgiveness,” he said.
Oloyede revealed that he plans to resume teaching and focus on his religious commitments, adding that the achievements recorded during his tenure were made possible by the dedication and hard work of JAMB staff.
He also defended the board’s handling of the controversial Mmesoma Ejikeme examination result case, insisting he had no regrets over the sanctions imposed. According to him, the decision was necessary to protect the integrity of JAMB’s examination system and to discourage examination malpractice.
While expressing sympathy for the former candidate, Oloyede maintained that the board acted responsibly and in accordance with its mandate, stressing that the disciplinary action was intended as a deterrent rather than an act of malice.
Meanwhile, the new JAMB Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, pledged to sustain the board’s reforms, promising to strengthen transparency and continue deploying technology to combat examination malpractice.
